I benefit from white privilege,

not because I am white,
but I am light, or was,
as gravity and emotion
dim my appearance
down to the roots.

In NYC, folks thought I was Puerto Rican.
In India, folks thoughtI was Indian.
One doctor in this area told his dictaphone
I was white, while addressing me as a white male.
(I never contradicted him.)

I chose a place neither here nor there,
an observer looking at life play out
from all seats in the theatre.

Police have pulled me over for various infractions,
on occasion placing a ‘W’ where race is/was noted.
When it’s the police, my quills go up and I think
what the fuck did i do this time?
Speak white. Be polite.
